The class meets daily (double periods every other day for freshman biology) and the activities in class will vary. Some of the common classroom activities include lectures, games, discussions, hands on labs & activities, computer based labs & tutorials and written assignments. I try to vary these to keep student level of interest at its peak. 2. Upon entering the classroom the student should go to his/her assigned seat and prepare for the days lesson. Be seated and ready to work by the late bell. Ready to work will include having a sharpened pencil or pen, Students own textbook, notebook and any other relevant materials (this would include having your own pencil on exam days). Students not in compliance will be marked tardy even if he/she is in the room. 3. There is a supply area at the back of the class area which is stocked with paper, staplers, tape and a garbage can--use it before the late bell. 4. Expect to work everyday;there will be no free periods. 5. If a student has been absent, his/her admit slip should be handed to me or placed on my desk. Dont wait for it, I will return it after I finish taking role. 6. If a student has a question or comment he/she should please raise his/her hand, there should be no talking outside of the current class discussion. When students are in lab groups, talking is limited to persons within that group. There should be no talking between groups; I consider this to be cheating. If I can pick out your voice then you are too loud and will lose points!!! 7. Students are expected to sit properly in his/her chair. There is to be no tipping or leaning back of the chairs, no feet on the chair in front of you, no projectiles, no heads down or sleeping. Any writing on the desks should be reported to the teacher immediately. 8. You may be excused to the restroom if you ask to go upon entering the room and before the ringing of the late bell (leave your books by the door and go to the boys restroom across from room 203 or the girls restroom across from room 205). No one will be excused after the late bell for any reason without an appropriate pass (in the students own blue agenda book). Please dont even ask!!! 9. All school rules will be enforced at all times. This includes appropriate attire (refer to student dress code), no visible undergarments, hats, gum, food, drink, radios, jackets or coats in the classroom. The teacher will have the final word on anything not specifically mentioned above. 10. Cheating is defined as taking credit for or turning in work that is not your own, including but not limited to copying, plagiarizing, or sharing answers with a classmate when both parties did not arrive at the answers mutually. Lab partners are expected to do their own work and arrive at answers together; they may not work on one part of an activity as their partner works on the other. Any work that is determined by the teacher to be cheating will receive a zero for the offending party and the contributing party. No bonuses will be given to any student caught cheating. 11. Upon hearing the tones for the PA system all talking and activity should immediately cease and attention should be paid to the announcement. 12. Students will alternate being classroom secretary for the daythis is a graded assignment and will be available for students who were absent from class to see what was completed on day(s) they were absent! 13. You will be dismissed by the teacher at the bell, NOT BY THE BELL. B. CLASSROOM & LAB REQUIRED (& RECOMMENDED) MATERIALS 1. Notebook: 1.5 or larger lose leaf style 3 ring binder is strongly recommended. You will fill it throughout the course of the year. Students will be required to keep all work from each 9 week grading period in your notebook. Any material distributed on colored paper must remain in the notebook all year. 2. A pencil or pen (either blue or black ink, work done in other colors will not be accepted). You must have a pencil on test days. I will not loan pencils, come to class prepared. 3. Colored pencils are provided but selection and quality are often at a premium. It is recommended that you provide your own, be sure to have the colors green, yellow, brown, red, blue & orange. 4. A calculator and ruler is recommended but will be provided when necessary in class. 5. Your instructor will provide most other materials for required course-work. C. CONSEQUENCES 1. Verbal warning. If a particular behavior becomes common or excessive this will be waived and we will move onto step 3. 2. Students having difficulty saying awake may be asked to stand (either beside his/her chair or at the back of the class area). 3. Lose class points and/or remain after class for a period of time determined by the teacher. You will not be given a pass to your next class!!! 4. Teacher Detention. The number of nights to be determined by the teacher depending upon the severity of the offense and frequency of occurrence. 5. Office Detention. The number of nights to be determined by the teacher and principle depending upon the severity of the offense and frequency of occurrence. NOTE: Upon receipt of a third teacher detention it will automatically become an office detention. From November 6, 2006-February 5, 2007 all detentions from this class will be office detentions. 6. Sent to office and a call home! 7. SEVERE CLAUSE!!!...If the teacher finds your actions severe or offensive step 6 will be implemented immediately. The teacher reserves the right to skip whichever steps deemed appropriate. D. REWARDS 1. Opportunity to earn test question passes and or homework passes. 2. Opportunity to earn extra credit or complete bonus work. 3. No bonus or extra credit will be awarded to any student who has not completed all of the required work for the course. E. GRADES 1. Grades will be based upon all points accumulated during the 9 weeks. This will include but is not limited to all homework & in-class assignments, labs, exams, quizzes, notebook checks and special projects. Class participation, and conduct, will also be weighted into student grades. 2. Exams will always be announced 3-5 days in advance. Quizzes will be either announced or unannounced but will always cover students knowledge of current work. 3. The grading scale is per Norwin School District Guidelines. 92-100 A 82-91 B Since this is an honors course, the students 70-81 C grade will be increased when 60-69 D calculating GPA. < 60 F 4. Grades are not automatically rounded up, but may be if the student has earned the higher grade. 5. No grading is done on a curve. Do your personal best and dont worry about how well or poorly your classmates are doing. 6. Students are expected to keep a record of his/her scores in a dedicated Biology notebook. I will provide each student with a Pink Sheet each grading period to accomplish this. Grades will be updated weekly. If there is ever a discrepancy the student will need this information to discuss your grade with me. F. HOMEWORK 1. Typically homework will be assigned 2-3 times per week. Sometimes the work will be reading, which is important to the success of the student and should not be ignored. Students are expected to read each chapter as the corresponding study guide is assigned. Oral quizzing will be utilized to measure student comprehension of reading assignments. 2. Other forms of homework will include but is not limited to text questions, worksheets, study guides, or projects. There will be 1 major project each term that will comprise about 14-20% of that grade. 3. All homework is corrected and graded. If the material is new or difficult it is checked for completeness and corrected in class. G. WORK & MAKE-UP WORK 1. Assignments: will be posted on the grade updates weekly. A student record keeper will record pertinent information from each class; this information will be placed in a binder at the student supply area. If a student is absent refer to this area to remain up to date. Additionally you may speak with me before class or during office hours. The student is responsible for all work from this class, whether he/she is here or not. The student will be allowed one day for each day of excused absence, up to one week to make up work. Work missed during an un-excused absence will not be accepted for make-up. All work must be made-up within one week of students return. 2. Class work is not to be considered homework unless specified. Anyone blowing off class time allotted to complete an assignment may not receive credit for that assignment, whether it is later completed or not. Nothing other than biology work should be done in biology class. 3. Exams and Quizzes: If a student misses the day of the exam or quiz, he/she must make it up the day of return. If one misses the day before the exam or quiz, then he/she must take it with the class. Students are encouraged to make up exams either before or after school to avoid missing additional class time. It the student fails to report at the scheduled make-up time, his/her score will drop 1 letter grade each day until the exam is made up. The make-up exam may not be the same exam taken by your classmates; the instructor reserves the right to use a different make-up exam to preserve the integrity of the examination process. Due to their nature, some quizzes may not be made up. If this is the case the student will not be penalized for his/her excused absence. 4. Laboratories: must be made up ASAP, and within 1 week. The student must make up a lab on his/her own time. This would mean before or after school, during lunch, or at home if the activity can be done at home. Labs that may be completed at home will be treated as homework (G.1.) and must be completed and turned in as homework. 5. Students may complete or make-up work before school (report before H. R. begins), during lunch or after school, arrangements must be made with the instructor for these times. 6. Students who are in school but miss class must turn in all work due for that day or it will be considered late. This means missing due to early dismissals for athletics, doctors or illness, or missing class due to a class activity or assembly, or any other reason not specifically stated. 7. Any work that is turned in late will be penalized at -40% / day. After 3 days the assignment is worth no points and detention will be assigned to complete the work. Any time after I collect an assignment is considered late. 8. No work from biology is to be done in any other class unless study time has been granted by that teacher. Any papers taken by another teacher will be given a zero. 9. Cheating: is very serious and will not be tolerated, students caught cheating will receive a zero on that activity or exercise, those helping a student to cheat will also receive a zero and the parents will be notified (A.9.). **Any work that is not made up as specified above will be marked incomplete and may not be made up. H. ATTENDANCE 1. Attendance is mandatory;one cannot be at ones best unless he/she is here. The students who are the most successful in this classroom are always present, attentive and complete their assignments correctly and on time. 2. If a student is in school and misses biology class for any reason (excused or not) all work due that day must be turned in, or it will be considered late. 3. If a student knows that he/she will be absent and notifies me in advance, I will be able to provide much of the work that will be covered in that students absence. Remember each student is ultimately responsible for his/her own make-up work. 4. Any un-excused or unlawful absence is unacceptable. A student will receive a zero for all work completed in class that day, any assignment due on the day of an un-excused or unlawful absence will be considered late. I. BONUS POINTS 1. Bonus points may be earned by completing various activities outside of class and they vary in point value. 2. Students may only earn bonus points if ALL assigned work is completed. Any out-standing assignments must be made up before any bonus work is accepted. J. FIRES AND EMERGENCIES 1. For fire and evacuation drills, students should exit the room and turn right. Proceed to the stadium end of the hall and down the stairs to the left. At the bottom of the stairs, students should go right through the double doors into the office hallway then left through the glass double doors (#30) out of the building. After exiting the building students should proceed across the parking lot past the vehicles and be quiet to await further instructions. Do not touch any of the vehicles in the parking lot and proceed directly to the grass. 2. For any emergencies that occur within the lab or classroom, refer to the Lab Procedures packet. K. OFFICE HOURS/COMMUNICATION 1. I am typically in the building by 6:50 am and stay until about 3:00 pm daily. I am also available during homeroom daily and during A lunch. If a student has any questions or needs help, he/she should not hesitate to ask. 2. If my hours dont suit, let me know. I may be able to arrange some extra time after school. 3. Between November and February my availability after school will be limited due to wrestling commitments. 4. If a parent needs to speak with me, please call the high school (724) 863-3005 and I will return the call the same day in most instances. My extension is 3202 it will not ring through but you may leave a message. 5.
