Mrs. Speakmon Announcements and information
Class Schedule: (posted outside of door)
o The children will be expected to dress for P.E. beginning Mon Aug 22. Failure to dress out for P.E. does impact their grade. To make it easier for the child we request they have a P.E. bag. Remember to label all their uniform clothing.
Morning Responsibilities:
o Lunch Procedures
o Take Home Folders
o Morning Paper
Curriculum:
o Reading, Writing, Math, and Religion are the core subjects and are taught every day. Social Studies and Science/Health are alternated.
Grading System: (E=excellent progress, V=very good progress, G=good progress, L= limited progress)
o Papers will be sent home on a weekly basis.
o Progress reports will be sent home in 4 weeks to give parents an idea how their child is progressing.
o Report cards are sent out every 9 weeks.
o If we observe a problem we will communicate this with you as needed.
Behavior:
o Students must abide by the rules in the student handbook. Please be sure to read the handbook and discuss with your child.
o Behavior Warnings – not a discipline tool but a reminder your child is not in compliance with the rules in the handbook. Behavior Warnings should not be taken lightly and should be discussed firmly with your child.
o Positive Reinforcement: We make every effort to recognize positive behavior by giving happy faces to the students who demonstrate good listening practices or for helping without being asked to.
Conference Times: After school as needed or during our planning period (1:05 – 1:45).
Arrivals and Departures:
o With the ongoing construction we ask you to abide completely with the rules. Please park accordingly and remind your child what your plans are for picking and dropping them off for school.
o School begins promptly at 8:10. Students must be in their chairs and parents are asked to leave promptly at 8:05. If you are late in the morning please be sure to go to the office for a tardy slip.
o Departure is at 3:25. Students will be released to you or an appropriate guardian in front of the Primary Bldg about the middle of the sidewalk. We ask that you not stand in front of the glass doors. If you are late picking up your child they will be taken to aftercare at 3:45. Aftercare is located in the cafeteria most days.
Student of the Week: We will begin next week Aug 22. This is an opportunity for your child to talk about themselves.
Birthdays: We have students who have food allergies to milk products, soy products, and all nuts. To ensure no one gets left out we would like to ask that no food be brought in for birthdays. Please check with teachers on items to bring.
Snack Time: Only during morning at approximately 9:30. We encourage you to pack a small drink and only one snack item.
Rest Time: Small pillow and blanket permitted. A small stuffed animal is acceptable if needed. Space is limited so we ask you to keep items very small. We recognize some children don’t take naps but they are still required to rest, not necessarily sleep. Rest time is about 35 minutes.
Homework Policy: Yes we have homework but not more than 15 minutes 2-3 times a week. There will be at least one book report and creative writing assignment but nothing the student can’t handle.
Accelerated reading: This is a program designed to increase students’ reading and comprehension levels. The first goal will begin after Christmas. Each student will be expected to earn 2.5 AR points during the 3rd and 4th quarter.
Volunteers: Yes! We need help on the playground.
