The Mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:
By providing intellectual and physical
access to materials in all formats.
By providing instruction to foster
competence and stimulate interest in
reading, viewing, and using
information and ideas.
By working with other educators to
design learning strategies to meet
the needs of individual students.
---GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAMS
For parents and students:
The JBHS Library is devoted to creating a friendly, academic atmosphere in which to read, do research, study, and write. Entire classes are invited to use the library by
appointment.
All interested classes will be invited to the library at the
start of the school year, especially freshmen, who will
receive a complete orientation on various materials and new resources available to the student body. The Library staff plans to facilitate the teaching of research and literature in every way possible.
Students may use the library during class periods if they come with a pass from their teacher. Students are expected to return to class five minutes before the end of the period.
The library is open to the students at break and at lunch. However, food may not be used anywhere in the Library. We expect the students to use the library at lunch time as a study hall - passes are required for entrance.
After-school hours, break, and lunch will find our students
working at computers, checking out books for recreational
reading, reading one of our current magazines, studying,
doing research, getting individual help with the research process, holding study group meetings, collating parts of a class project, making copies, etc. The atmosphere in the library will be business like, but hands-on and student-friendly.
The library has a network of 11 computers. All of these workstations provide access to Internet navigation, as well, connection to CD Rom databases, and the on-line library catalog. The following software is available on these computers: Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel. The students may bring a disk to copy their work to or to print from to take to class.
For teachers:
Purpose
The LIBRARY program is designed to introduce students to the basic resources in the library and to give them the research strategies needed for a specific course or assignment.
Library orientation, offered throughout the year, will include an introduction to library services and collections in various formats -- print and electronic.
Scheduling Whole-Class Library Use
The faculty is asked to please schedule library research time in advance, whenever possible. To schedule library time stop by the desk and sign up for the periods and days desired. Please tell the library personnel the nature of the assignment so that when your classes arrive they are prepared to help them.
