Textbooks

Please keep books covered all year long.  A $0.25 fee will be charged for any book uncovered.

Spelling

Words lists come from the Reading story.  New word lists will be sent home at the introduction of the story..  Tests will be given at the end of the story.  Unit tests and dictation tests will be used to evaluate the child’s general level of spelling ability of sight words and frequently used words.  Dictation sentences will be given also to assess spelling, capitalization and punctuation.

Accelerated Reading Program

The students will be required to check out AR books ON THEIR OWN from the school library.  (The number of books in the classroom is limited.)  They are required to take a computerized test on the content matter of the books.  Grades are given on both accomplished goal and accuracy of answers.

The student’s AR password is their library number.  Keeping this number secure insures that each child takes their own tests rather than risking another child doing so.  Please remember that children may NOT be assisted in taking an AR test.

Requirements:  A minimum of 5 points (may be at least 10 books) per 9 weeks.  A grade will be given each nine-week period.  A bulletin board in the classroom lets students know when their goal has been reached.  Individual tracking of points and tests taken are the students’ and parents’ responsibility.  This will count as a Reading test grade.  Tests may be taken in the library before and after school and may be taken in the classroom during the day.

Library

Library grades given by Mrs. Martinez will be averaged into the Reading grade.

Math

A flashcard drill is a standing homework assignment.  A 5-10 minute drill should be done nightly PLEASE. (Addition and subtraction in the beginning, multiplication later)

PLEASE MARK ALL SUPPLIES AND CLOTHING!!!!!

Mass Day

Friday at 8:30 a.m. (unless the calendar specifies otherwise) The children will serve as lectors and song leaders when it is their turn.  (Uniform shorts may be worn to mass.)

On days during which students are a part of the congregation, they are expected to participate in prayer and singing and are expected to use proper posture in sitting, kneeling and standing.

Parents who wish to have their child sit with them during Mass, please pick them up from the back of church as the class enters and return them to the teacher in the church before the class departs.  DO NOT GO BACK TO THE CLASSROOM.  No parents may sit with the class due to limited seating.

Region 20 Services

Educational videos and other media will be utilized to reinforce subject matters.

Assignment Books / PAWS Binders

*Teachers give an overview of the PAWS binders.

These will be used to notify you of homework and any other items that need your attention.  Please check it and initial it daily.  Homework will include review of material covered in class that day, a reminder of upcoming tests and any unfinished class work. Normal homework nights should take no more than 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the needs of your child.

Power School / Email

Grades will be updated each week. We prefer the use of email but will not be able to reply to you regarding specifics such as grades and/or behaviors due to the sensitive nature of these topics.  If this kind of information is requested, we will reply to you, stating a time and manner in which we will answer your questions / concerns, for which a conference may be scheduled.

Homework will be posted at www.yourhomework.com.  Would anyone like to volunteer to take care of this?

Missing Assignments

Students will use any “free / play” time to complete unfinished or missing assignments.  Notices will be sent home when an assignment is missing for more than a day. Unfinished class work still left incomplete at the end of the day will be sent home for homework and needs to be returned the following day. $0.25 will be charged for each page that needs to be copied for a lost assignment.

Absent Work

Students have three days to complete work that they missed due to an absence.  This is NOT 3 days per day missed.  If special arrangements need to be made due to lengthy assignments, parents must discuss this with each teacher individually.  Absent work may be picked up at the end of the missed day but will not be given ahead of time for a “planned” absence.

Birthdays

Due to food allergies and other factors, we are asking that you not send in food treats in celebration of birthdays.  Instead, feel free to send in items such as pencils or stickers or other non-food items.  And if they are school-related (i.e. pencils) the students can enjoy the treat throughout the day!

Parties

For the same reasons as above, please do not send in extra treats for parties. We are coordinating our party planning as a grade level so that both classes are treated equally.  We are also working towards healthier party foods due to a new wellness plan given by the Archdiocese.

Mornings

Please do not come into the classrooms in the morning.  We run a tight schedule first thing in the morning and would greatly appreciate your cooperation.  If you need to speak with the teacher, please send in a note to make an appointment.  We are available most days after school beginning at 3:45.

Thanks ahead of time for your cooperation and interest in your child’s overall education.  Let’s work together as a team.
